The History of World of Warcraft Classic

Behind the current landscape of Azeroth lies a decade-long saga of nostalgic reclamation. The journey began on November 3, 2017, when J. Allen Brack took the stage at BlizzCon to announce WoW Classic, satisfying a community that had spent years clamoring for the return of the original 2004 game state.

On August 26, 2019, the original WoW Classic launched, causing immense queue times as hundreds of thousands of players rushed back to Westfall and the Barrens. The vanilla content phases progressed steadily, culminating in the deployment of the terrifying floating necropolis Naxxramas on December 3, 2020.

Recognizing the appetite for progression, Blizzard launched Burning Crusade Classic on June 1, 2021, opening the Dark Portal once more. This was soon followed by the widely popular Wrath of the Lich King Classic on September 26, 2022, allowing players to face the Lich King in high-definition nostalgia.

Parallel to progression, Blizzard experimented with alternative rulesets. The fast-paced Season of Mastery arrived on November 16, 2021. Later, after players popularized the self-imposed one-life challenge, official Classic Hardcore realms launched on August 24, 2023.

The most radical shift came with the Season of Discovery on November 30, 2023, introducing class-altering runes and new level-up raids. This breathed new life into Classic, serving as a playground for what many hope will be a permanent Classic Plus future.

Finally, to mark the game's two-decade milestone, Blizzard launched the 20th Anniversary Edition Realms on November 21, 2024, offering a fresh start with accelerated progression and Quality of Life adjustments. As we move through 2026, the Classic franchise remains a thriving, multi-faceted ecosystem that shows no sign of slowing down.
